Head chore assistant…..from gathering eggs and retrieving the chickens the kids invariably let out to moving the horned Dexter cattle with me. A natural herding dog that will find a way to get “not so co-operative” new mother cows to move with their calves for me.
Predator control chief….. keeps the coyotes at bay day and night, let’s the Redtail Hawks overhead know they’re not welcome to the Silkies & ducks, catches more mice than a lifetime of cats have, convinced the skunks to move out and since we’ve had no more problems with Bobcats and Owls with the chickens credit goes there too.
Deer Control….. we no longer have deer sleeping in our yard and eating our fruit trees! They can walk about 10’ outside the fence line on their way through and aren’t chased, but know the boundary the ES has set!
Wild Turkey alert…. The new flock of turkeys that cross our property 2-3 times daily are announced, not chased, and respect the boundary also.
Doesn’t bother the cows, horses & birds unless we are working with them. He plays with the kids, lounges on the porch or on special occasions gets to lay by our feet in the house.
Travels well in our Motor Home and provides a true sense of security to me traveling cross country with the kids and cows.
Intelligence and love are visible through his eyes and actions, this dog cares for us as much as we care for him!

Boston is fiercely protective of his family when they are working with the horned Dexters. He uses a variety of weapons to herd effectively. He will gather or drive to suit the situation. He'll nip the hock or tail as needed in a closer situation. If he cannot get a cow to move through the gate, he may get in front and entice her to chase him into the pen. He uses a crouching position, uses eye, and also dominance postures to accomplish different tasks. He works close and seldom barks. There is little need for guardian ability on his farm. We don't know a lot about his guardian ability, but when his cats were kittens he would play with them and share his food bowl and pillow with them. Now he still shares but they don't play anymore. Boss is a moderately soft dog who takes instruction with little question. He generally gets along with other dogs but is more tolerant off his territory. He can be suspicious of unknown strangers but accepts them when his owners tell him to.
